Particle Triggered Reactions as an Important Mechanism of Alkalinity and Inorganic Carbon Removal in River Plumes

چکیده

The effects of heterogeneous reactions between river-borne particles and the carbonate system were studied in plumes Mississippi Brazos rivers. Measurements within these revealed significant removal dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) total alkalinity (TA). After accounting for all known DIC TA sinks sources, (i.e., CaCO3 precipitation cation exchange adsorbed ions) found to be responsible a fraction removal, exceeding 10% 90%, respectively, plume waters. This finding was corroborated by laboratory experiments, which seeding seawater with riverine induced TA. combined results demonstrate that may represent an important controlling mechanism particle-rich coastal areas significantly impact cycle.

Inorganic Phosphate as an Important Regulator of Phosphatases

Cellular metabolism depends on the appropriate concentration of intracellular inorganic phosphate (Pi). Pi starvation-responsive genes appear to be involved in multiple metabolic pathways, implying a complex Pi regulation system in microorganisms and plants. A group of enzymes is required for absorption and maintenance of adequate phosphate levels, which is released from phosphate esters and an...

CO2 perturbation experiments: similarities and differences between dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity manipulations

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) through human activities and invasion of anthropogenic CO2 into the surface ocean alters the seawater carbonate chemistry, increasing CO2 and bicarbonate (HCO − 3 ) at the expense of carbonate ion (CO 3 ) concentrations. This redistribution in the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) pool decreases pH and carbonate saturation state (). Several components...
